    Description

Early 1800s coin from Brazil has a lot of history and has been in our family collection for 75+ years. It was counter-struck as a 40 Reis somewhere between 1823 and 1831. I haven't been able to positively identify the specific year within that time period due to wear.
From its size, 39mm X 2.5mm, and it's weight, it was originally an 80 Reis coin. Some articles call the process of changing the denomination from 80 to 40 as bench stamping. The history can be found under KM444 with a decimal point for each of several years when this was done.
